Life Coaching Basics: Format, Scope, and What to Ask

Understand how life coaching is structured, what coaching does not replace, how virtual and in-person formats differ, and what to verify before paying.

Life coaching is a structured conversation intended to support goals, decisions, habits, or accountability. It is not a protected title in many places, and the format, training, price, and boundaries can differ substantially between coaches.

Use this collection to understand the basic buying decision: whether coaching fits the need, which format is practical, what evidence to review, and what terms should be clear before an engagement begins.

Know what coaching is—and is not

A coach may help you clarify a goal, examine options, plan actions, and review follow-through. Coaching should not be used for diagnosis, treatment, crisis care, legal advice, medical advice, or financial recommendations requiring a licensed professional.

Ask the coach to explain their scope in plain language and describe situations in which they refer a prospective client elsewhere. Clear boundaries are a useful trust signal.

Choose a workable format

Virtual coaching can expand specialty and scheduling options, while in-person coaching may matter to people who prefer local meetings. Neither format is inherently better. Consider privacy, accessibility, time zone, travel, technology, and how materials or follow-up are shared.

Confirm actual availability rather than relying on a profile badge alone. Ask about session length, frequency, rescheduling, between-session contact, and what happens when either party decides the fit is not right.
