Bujumbura remains a current city and Burundi's economic capital; Gitega has been the political capital since 2019. The administrative denominator changed again in 2025. Burundi's presidency says the national reorganization reduced 18 provinces to five and identifies a newly enlarged Bujumbura Province. Older records use Bujumbura Mairie as a province containing the urban communes of Muha, Mukaza, and Ntahangwa. This page uses Bujumbura for the city decision. It does not treat the former mairie, every commune in the enlarged province, or the Lake Tanganyika corridor as one local market.
