Kunming is the capital of Yunnan and a prefecture-level municipality. Yunnan Civil Affairs' current administrative table reports 14 county-level divisions: seven municipal districts, one county-level city, three counties, and three autonomous counties. That is much wider than the dense central city. A 2025 natural-resources assessment separately defined an 826-square-kilometre central-city study area, illustrating why municipality-wide statistics cannot be relabeled as downtown facts.
Kunming Municipal Statistics reported 8.687 million permanent residents at the end of 2024 across the municipality's 14 county-level units, including both urban and rural residents. The generated directory figure of 3,855,346 is stale and must not be used as a current municipality population. Population scale can help a visitor understand the geographic boundary, but it does not establish demand for coaching, a job, a customer, a programme place, travel conditions, or the circumstances of an individual in Wuhua, Panlong, Guandu, Xishan, Chenggong, another district, a county, or Anning.
