El Obeid, also romanized Al-Ubayyid, is the capital of Sudan’s North Kordofan State. The route is bounded to that city, not all of Kordofan. Current evidence requires an unusually strong safety gate: a United Nations statement on June 18, 2026 warned about military reinforcements around El Obeid, civilian and infrastructure risk, and the need for humanitarian access. A July 3 UN human-rights statement described escalating atrocity risk and effects on fuel and water.
